Our Emergency Crisis Shelter has the capacity to shelter and support 35 women and children per night. La Casa's downtown San Francisco office houses our two 24-hour Crisis Phone Lines, a Drop-In Counseling Center, the Teen Intervention & Prevention Program, and the Community Education & Outreach Program. All services are offered free-of-charge in English and Spanish.

Donations: La Casa de las Madres celebrates our 30th Anniversary in 2006: 30 years of providing protection, nurturing, opportunity and assistance to thousands of women, teens and children. We could not do it without you! Click here to contribute to this work, and our ongoing legacy, today.

Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF)

Here are some of the ways that RTSF utilizes volunteer energy:

  • Rebuilding Weekend - A big volunteer event that happens every year on the last weekend in April. On Rebuilding Weekend, RTSF manages 30 home and 10-12 facility renovation projects benefiting low-income seniors and community-serving nonprofit organizations. You can be involved as a project captain if you have a background in construction or project management. If you have building skills but don't want to lead a project, you can be a great support to any project and we would welcome your involvement on any level! Even if you don't have a background in construction you can volunteer to help on a project. There are many tasks that can be done on Rebuilding Weekend that require no previous building experience. You are welcome to join in on the fun!

Time Commitment: If you are a project captain, you will be assigned your project in early March and work through March and April to manage the scope of work. You will have outstanding support from the RTSF staff throughout the process. The project will culminate the last weekend of April when you will be managing a team of volunteers to renovate a home or facility in one-day. If you are not a project captain, there are various weekends in April when your assistance would be helpful.

  • Home Safety and Independence - A year-round program that provides free safety modifications in the homes of seniors and disabled persons with limited income. We are always looking for people with handy skills to install grab bars and perform light repairs that keep our clients safer in their homes. If you have a background in carpentry or other skilled trade, such as plumbing or electrical, you can make an enormous difference to a person's quality of life through the Home Safety and Independence program.

Time Commitment: 2-4 days each per month (Monday-Friday) to provide safety modifications.

  • Office Volunteer - We can always use help in the Rebuilding Together office doing data entry, organizing and mailing tasks. Our office is located on the Embarcadero and has a fun and informal atmosphere where your energy would be greatly appreciated.

Time Commitment: 2-4 days each per month (Monday-Friday) to assist in the office.

  • Sponsorship - Corporate sponsors and community groups provide financial support and have the option of bringing a team to renovate a home or facility. Project sponsors are a vital part of the work that we do. You can organize a group from your office or from a group of friends to work on a Rebuilding Weekend project. Sponsorships range from $500 - $30,000.

Time Commitment: In March and April, we ask that you attend a few project meetings and if applicable, recruit volunteers and various items for your project.

Edgewood Center for Children and Families

As the oldest, continually operating children's charity in the western United States, Edgewood has been committed to the well-being of children and families for 153 years. Founded in 1851 as a refuge for orphans of the California Gold Rush, Edgewood still provides a home for some of the most severely abused children in California.

Edgewood also operates a continuum of prevention, early intervention, and intensive therapeutic programs and services to help support children, families, relative caregivers, teachers and schools. In fact, with an annual operating budget of $18.2 million, the agency is the largest non-profit provider of mental health and related services to children and youth in San Francisco.

Over the past year, Edgewood's staff and volunteers served more than 5,000 clients through four programs: 1) community-based services for kinship care families; 2) school-based services for children, families, and teachers; and 3) a home and school for abused and neglected children.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Breakfast Club:
Volunteers help children make breakfast in our residential cottages on the weekends.
  • Gardening:
Help our master gardeners keep Edgewood sites in bloom.
  • Special Friend:
Nurture a one-on-one relationship with a particular Edgewood child.
  • Circle of Care:
Tutoring and teaching opportunities at San Francisco public schools.

The Good Samaritan Family Resource Center (GSFRC)

GSFRC has been serving the needs of newly arrived families in San Francisco for 106 years. Their mission is to help immigrant families -- especially the newly arrived -- access needed services, develop self-sufficiency and participate in the community.

For more information about GSFRC, please visit their web site at www.goodsamfrc.org.

Philanthropy By Design (PBD)

PBD is a charitable organization "tailor made" for Facility Management professionals!

Since 1987, Philanthropy By Design has helped not-for-profit agencies do their jobs better by providing furnishings and design assistance, and has reduced the amount of otherwise usable materials going to Bay Area landfills. PBD has provided design services to over 100 agencies in the Bay Area and saved over 1,000 tons of furnishings from going to the land fill.

Got cubicles? Have you recently remodeled your facility? Closed a facility? Wondering what to do with the leftovers? Please consider a donation to PBD.
